In a curtailed League Cup programme over the weekend Aberporth caused a major upset as they dumped last year's finalists Maesglas out of the competition in a game that was settled by the dreaded penalty shoot-out.
Six goals were shared in what turned out to be an entertaining and closely fought encounter. Jed Townsend gave the home side an early lead before Dean Winney sneaked in to net the equaliser.
After Mathew Newbold Jones had restored the home advantage Dai Cole with two well taken goals put the visitors ahead for the first time before Jed Towsend pounced for his second to take the game into penalties.
The shoot-out turned out to be a very one sided affair and with Maesglas missing three of their efforts Aberporth comfortably made their way into the last eight.
New Quay had little difficulty in overcoming Llanboidy. After Craig Richardson had given them an interval lead they wrapped it up in the second half with goals from Jonathan Evans, Chris Atkinson and Charlie Dent.
It was a similar story in the game between Crannog and Pencader. After the visitors had taken an early lead a Jordan Jones hat-trick swung the pendulum before Leigh Davies put the result beyond any doubt.
There was little joy for the two local clubs participating in the Central Wales Challenge Cup Third Round. Despite goals from James Hemming and Jason Jones Aberaeron lost to Meifod whilst Lampeter bowed out against Spar Mid-Wales League side Newbridge. |
